Versaterm is a Canadian corporation based in Ottawa, Ontario that develops information systems for police agencies.

Versaterm was founded in 1977 by principals after spending a number of years building and refining the Canadian equivalent to NCIC and NLETS. From the beginning, the focus was to create advanced information and management systems for municipal Public Safety agencies. Versaterm has been doing Fire/Police/EMS systems for integrated dispatch and early EOC’s since 1985. The company went through several ’start over’ product generations before adopting modern, OPEN tools and environments in 1986. Since then, Versaterm products have been UNIX/Linux based, used RDBMS products and used other ‘middleware’ to assure that the products did not rely on any specific proprietary component.

Versaterm products were first employed in the U.S. in 1991, in the Caribbean in 1995 and gained major market share through the Y2K replacement cycle that so many North American Police agencies experienced. Versaterm is a privately held corporation based in Ottawa, with a wholly owned US based subsidiary located in Scottsdale, AZ. The company has experienced an average 30+ per cent annual growth rate since 1998 and is financially quite healthy.

Property Propertarian

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the September 12th, 2007

Propertarianism is the advocacy of the private individual or corporate ownership of legal, transferable, private property titles within a free market. The term was coined by Ursula K. Le Guin in her novel, The Dispossessed (1974). Some libertarian socialists use the term to refer to libertarians who support property rights in order to distinguish them from their own non-propertarian form of libertarianism. Capitalist libertarians sometimes use this label for themselves, as seen, for instance, in the novel The Probability Broach (1980), by L. Neil Smith, where the fictionalized version of the Libertarian Party is called the Propertarian Party.

Specifically, propertarianism recognizes all economically scarce goods as legitimate property. This includes “natural capital” such as land, but does not necessarily include non-scarce goods such as intellectual property (patents and copyrights.) This view is criticized by those that base property on production or use, such as libertarian socialists and geolibertarians.

Propertarianism can be “soft,” asserting that private property is morally permissible, or it can be ‘hard,’ asserting that private property is the only valid form of property.
