Niche describes a specific Complement fixation test

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the February 28th, 2008

The complement fixation test is an immunological medical test looking for evidence of infection. It tests for the presence of either specific antibody or specific antigen in a patient’s serum. It uses sheep red blood cells (sRBC), anti-sRBC antibody and complement, plus specific antigen (if looking for antibody in serum) or specific antibody (if looking for antigen in serum).

If either the antibody or antigen is present in the patient’s serum, then the complement is completely utilized, so the sRBCs are not lysed. But if the antibody (or antigen) is not present, then the complement is not used up, so it binds anti-sRBC antibody, and the sRBCs are lysed.

The Wassermann test is one form of complement fixation test.

Condos equestrian Waterstock

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the February 28th, 2008

Waterstock is small sleepy village in Oxfordshire, England. It is located approximately 7 km west of Thame just off the A418 and about 1 km from the M40 motorway Junction 8.

In the village itself there is very little other than around 50 houses, a church, farm and a public phone box along one main street. Near the motorway junction there is a motorway service station (named Oxford services) and a public golf course. The creation of both caused much opposition from the village residents who saw them as a threat to the quiet village life.

There is a strong equestrian presence in the village; many of the houses in Waterstock have their own stables. Waterstock House Training Centre was once the main equestrian centre of the area, and was once owned by the famous Lars Sederholm, a well known horse trainer.

Niche describes a specific Rigidity

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the February 28th, 2008

Generally, rigidity refers to inflexibility or resistance to change. It has a number of specific meanings depending on the field of application.

In medicine (neurology) rigidity describes an increase in muscle tone, leading to a resistance to passive movement throughout the range of motion.

In psychology, rigidity refers to an obstacle to problem solving which arises from over-dependence on prior experience, which makes it difficult for a person with experience in a specific problem domain to recognize novel solution strategies. This phenomenon is also known as a mental set. A specific example is functional fixedness, which is a difficulty conceiving new uses for familiar objects.

In solid mechanics, “rigidity” refers to the degree of deforming ability of a solid material. Modulus of elasticity times moment of inertia (E*I) is the numeric value of rigidity. According to this expression , one can see there only two criteria affect deformation, which are Geometry and the material of an object.

Rigidity is also known as the material property of shear modulus which is a measure of force per unit area needed to change the shape of a material.

Market. Market sector

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the February 28th, 2008

The term Market Sector is used in economics and finance to describe a set of businesses that are buying and selling such similar goods and services that they are in direct competition with each other. Analysts divide the stock market itself into market sectors so that shares of companies that are in direct competition are listed alongside each other.

In the bond market it refers to the division of the market by the type of issuer. E.g. government, state, corporate, or utility.

The term is also used in marketing to describe sections of the mass market that can be specifically targeted in advertising campaigns. In this context it is correctly called Market segment.

Markets are often split into sectors using the Global Industry Classification Standard.

Property Premises

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the February 28th, 2008
For other uses, see Premise

Premises are land and buildings together considered as a property. This usage arose from property owners finding the word in their title deeds, where it originally correctly meant “the aforementioned; what this document is about”, from Latin prae-missus = “placed before”.

Some people suppose that since “premises” looks like a plural, a single house or other piece of property must be a “premise”; but the word “premise” is reserved for use as a term in logic meaning something assumed or taken as given in making an argument.

Premises liability

Premises liability is the liability for a landowner for certain torts that occur on the real property.

Luxury homes. These are Luxury tax (sports)

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the February 28th, 2008

A luxury tax in the sports sense is a surcharge put on the aggregate payroll of a team to the extent to which it exceeds a predetermined guideline level set by the league. The ostensible purpose of this “tax” is to prevent teams in major markets with high incomes from signing almost all of the more talented players and hence destroying the competitive balance necessary for a sport to maintain fan interest. The money derived from the “tax” is then divided among the teams that play in the smaller markets, presumably to allow them to have more revenue to devote toward the contracts of high-quality players.

Currently in North America, Major League Baseball has implemented the luxury tax system; as of this writing it has seemed to have little impact on the free-spending ways of New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, who was largely regarded as its primary target. The National Basketball Association also has a luxury tax provision; its utility is somewhat limited by the fact that the league also has a salary cap provision. The “hard” salary cap of the National Football League has, at least to this point, prevented any need for a luxury tax arrangement there.

It was widely assumed that the negotiations between the National Hockey League owners and players would have had to result in the implementation of a luxury tax, a salary cap, or some combination of both either under those or other names; most NHL teams were not financially long-term viable enterprises under the current arrangements. In the end, a hard salary cap was agreed upon.

Usage. Direct material total variance

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the February 28th, 2008

In variance analysis (accounting) direct material total variance is the difference between the actual cost of actual number of units produced and its budgeted cost in terms of material. Direct material total variance can be divided into two components:

  • the direct material price variance,
  • the direct material usage variance.

Example

Let us assume that standard direct material cost of widget is as follows:

2 kg of unobtainium at € 60 per kg ( = € 120 per unit).

Let us assume further that during the given period, 100 widgets were manufactured, using 212 kg of unobtainium which cost € 13,144.

Under those assumptions direct material total variance can be calculated as:

Direct material total variance can be reconciled to direct material price variance and direct material usage variance by:

See direct material usage variance#Example and direct material price variance#Example for computations of both components.

The Dark Times refer to the era in the fictional Star Wars universe during which the grip of Palpatine’s Galactic Empire tightened around the galaxy. The era began with Order 66, and the subsequent Great Jedi Purge. It arguably ended with the death of the Emperor in Return of the Jedi. The Star Wars Live-Action TV series, set for production in 2007, is to be set during the Dark Times in the chronological period between the two movie trilogies.
As of now, few books have been written or are scheduled to be written in this era. The “Coruscant Nights” Trilogy by Michael Reaves was set to make its debut on April 26 2006.

Categories in Taxation in the Netherlands

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the February 27th, 2008

The Netherlands has a rich history dealing with taxation, predating the Romanic period.

Some of the most important taxes are that of the Income Tax (Wet op de inkomstenbelasting 2001), the Wage Tax (Wet op de loonbelasting 1964), the Value Added Tax (Wet op de omzetbelasting 1968) and the Corporate Tax (Wet op de vennootschapsbelasting 1969).

Contents

Income Tax

The Netherlands has a progressive tax rate. For a while, the highest income bracket in the Netherlands was 72%, but now this is 52%. The brackets are 1.8%, 9.35%, 42% and 52%. The first two brackets also contain the Social Security payments (premiums, AOW, ANW and AWBZ), making it effectively 32.6% higher - or 34.4%, 41.95%, 42% and 52%.

Value Added Tax

Generally speaking, there are two categories. There are foods and essentials, and non-foods and luxuries. These two categories have rates of 6% and 19% respectively.

Corporate Tax

20% for the first € 25,000, 23.5% for the second € 35,000 and above that a corporate tax rate of 25.5%

Games of Chance Tax

There will be no taxes when people win € 454 or less or when the entry fee was higher than the won price.
If the price is higher than € 454 then there will be a tax rate of 29%, but when the host takes care of the taxes you multiply it by 100 and divide it by 71, after that you take 29% of that amount which will be the tax.

Used by real Totally real number field

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the February 27th, 2008

In number theory, a number field K is called totally real if for each embedding of K into the complex numbers the image lies inside the real numbers. Equivalent conditions on K, a finite extension of the rational number field Q, are that K is generated over Q by one root of an integer polynomial P, all of the roots of P being real; or that the tensor product algebra of K with the real field, over Q, is a product of copies of R.

For example, quadratic fields K of degree 2 over Q are either real (and then totally real), or complex, depending on whether the square root of a positive or negative number is adjoined to Q. In the case of cubic fields, a cubic integer polynomial P irreducible over Q will have at least one real root. If it has one real and two complex roots the corresponding cubic extension of Q defined by adjoining the real root will not be totally real, although it is a field of real numbers.

The totally real number fields play a significant special role in algebraic number theory. An abelian extension of Q is either totally real, or contains a totally real subfield over which it has degree two.

Founded as Electronic Realty Leura Collins

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the February 27th, 2008

Leura Collins was a member of Retail Clerks Union Local 455 and subject of a workplace theft investigation that resulted in the 1975 Supreme Court of the United States case NLRB v. J. Weingarten, Inc., .

Contents

History

Weingarten Inc. was founded in 1948 as a retailer. By 1972, Weingarten Inc. operated 100 stores, some of which included “lunch counters”, and others which included “lobby food operations.” These counters/lobbies provided eat-in or carry-out dining options for customers. Collins was employed from 1961-1970 at store #2 as a “lunch counter” sales person. She transferred to store #98 where she was a sales person at the “lobby food operation.”

Loss Prevention Specialists were employed by Weingarten Inc and operated at the companies stores undercover, sometimes unbeknownst to management to observe/apprehend people suspected of theft, including employees. In June of 1972, Loss Prevention Specialist “Hardy” observed the lobby operation at store #98 for 2 days (without the knowledge of management) to investigate a report that Collins was stealing money from the cash register. Hardy disclosed his presence to the store manager only after his 2 day investigation turned up no evidence. The store manager then told Hardy that he was just informed by a coworker that Collins had taken a $2.98 box of chicken and put only 1$ into the cash register. Collins was then interviewed by both Hardy and the store manager.

Interview #1

Collins repeatedly requested union representation at the meeting, but her requests were denied. The interview continued and Collins explained that the “lobby” had run out of small boxes, so she had to use the large size ($2.98) box to hold her small ($1) order of chicken. Hardy left the interview and was able to verify with another employee that they had indeed run out of small boxes, and the employee who reported her was unaware of how many pieces of chicken were in the box. Hardy returned to the interview and apologized for the confusion and informed Collins that his investigation was over.

Interview #2

Collins then burst into tears and proclaimed the only thing she ever took was her free lunch. Hardy and the manager were surprised to hear this because their understanding was that free lunches were provided in stores with “lunch counters” (e.g. #2), but not in those with “lobby food operations” (e.g. #98). A new interrogation proceeded and Collins’ renewed request for union representation was again denied. Hardy computed a total of $160 owed the company by Collins for these free lunches. However, a call to company headquarters revealed much confusion regarding the companies 2 different free lunch policies. In fact, most other employees at the “lobby food operation” at store #98, including the manager, had taken free lunches. The store manager asked Collins to keep the interview confidential, but she informed her union shop steward.

In 1985, Weingarten Inc was restructured into a realty investment firm, Weingarten Realty Investors.

A specific segment of 16-bit application

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the February 26th, 2008

A 16 bit application is any software written for MS-DOS, OS/2 1.x or early versions of Microsoft Windows which originally ran on the 16-bit Intel 8088 and Intel 80286 microprocessors. Such applications used a 20-bit or 24-bit segment or selector-offset address representation to extend the range of addressable memory locations beyond what was possible using only 16-bit addresses. Programs containing more than <math>2^{16}</math> bytes (64 kibibytes) of instructions and data therefore required special instructions to switch between their 64-kibibyte segments, increasing the complexity of programming 16-bit applications.

Property Mental property

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the February 26th, 2008

A mental property or a mind property is a property of a/the mind. Mental properties are studied by many sciences and parasciences. We may only mention: psychology, cognitive sciences and recently also systemics.

There are three main scientific approaches to the study/modeling of mind (properties).

  • The primary is the classical one, it considers mind as an intrinsic property of the human brain only.
  • The second is focused on the engineering research for the development of an abstract/synthetic mind/brain for robots and computers which satisfies requested functional properties.
  • The third is a most universal research, dealing with a concept of generalized/universal and synthetic mind as a possible or existing property of the Universe. Such research is the common interdisciplinary domain of interest of the philosophy of mind, artificial intelligence and different systemic and meta-systemic approches with a strong contribution from physicists and mathematicians.

The basic concrete objective of all these research is to develop such model of mind/intelligence which could be implemented on the computer and could be considered sufficiently “humanlike” or better (?).

Philosophy of mind perspective

A simple concrete example:
If someone pricks you with a pin, you will most likely feel pain. That instance of feeling pain is an instantiation of the property being in (or a) pain.
It is important to distinguish between the predicate ‘is a pain’ which is a linguistic entity, and the property denoted by the predicate. This becomes important in the philosophy of mind when the two are confused, especially concerning intertheoretic reductionism and ontological reductionism.

Raymond Williams’ most influential book, it is perhaps most famous for coining the phrase ‘cultural studies’. Influenced by both Karl Marx and F. R.
