The property they Mental property

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the April 29th, 2008

A mental property or a mind property is a property of a/the mind. Mental properties are studied by many sciences and parasciences. We may only mention: psychology, cognitive sciences and recently also systemics.

There are three main scientific approaches to the study/modeling of mind (properties).

  • The primary is the classical one, it considers mind as an intrinsic property of the human brain only.
  • The second is focused on the engineering research for the development of an abstract/synthetic mind/brain for robots and computers which satisfies requested functional properties.
  • The third is a most universal research, dealing with a concept of generalized/universal and synthetic mind as a possible or existing property of the Universe. Such research is the common interdisciplinary domain of interest of the philosophy of mind, artificial intelligence and different systemic and meta-systemic approches with a strong contribution from physicists and mathematicians.

The basic concrete objective of all these research is to develop such model of mind/intelligence which could be implemented on the computer and could be considered sufficiently “humanlike” or better (?).

Philosophy of mind perspective

A simple concrete example:
If someone pricks you with a pin, you will most likely feel pain. That instance of feeling pain is an instantiation of the property being in (or a) pain.
It is important to distinguish between the predicate ‘is a pain’ which is a linguistic entity, and the property denoted by the predicate. This becomes important in the philosophy of mind when the two are confused, especially concerning intertheoretic reductionism and ontological reductionism.

Biography

Education

Sellers, born in Crowborough, Sussex, was educated at Tyttenhanger Lodge Pre-preparatory School in Seaford, East Sussex and Cranbrook School, Kent and earned a bachelor of science degree in ecological science from the University of Edinburgh and a doctorate in biometeorology from the University of Leeds. Sellers’ work in the field of meteorology has focused primarily on computer modelling of climate systems.

Career

He and his wife left the UK in 1982, moving to Maryland in the United States. Sellers began applying to become an astronaut in 1984, but his lack of US citizenship was a problem; he became a naturalised US citizen in 1991.

Sellers was selected as a NASA astronaut candidate in 1996 and flew his first space mission aboard STS-112 in 2002. On this mission he performed three spacewalks to help install the third piece of the International Space Station structure.

His favourite band is rock group Garbage. He met the band in Houston, Texas when the band played there in April 2002. He told them he would be taking their albums into space with him. When he met the group for the second time in November 2002, he showed them a picture of their album spinning free in outerspace. He was mildly embarrassed, because the CD was in fact a Russian bootleg and not an official pressing of their album.

Sellers also took with him a copy of Cranbrook School’s charter which was signed by his fellow astronauts and then presented to the school. The school’s observatory, built in 2005, is named after him.

He also took a University of Edinburgh flag into space, which he presented to the University when he and his fellow crew members visited to give a talk about STS-112. This flag can now be seen in the display cabinets behind the Reception at Old College, Edinburgh.

Sellers made his next spaceflight on STS-121, which launched on 4 July 2006. On July 8, Sellers with Michael E. Fossum conducted a 7 and a half hour spacewalk making a repair to the ISS and testing using the Shuttle’s arm as a platform for making repairs to the Shuttle.

Market. Examples include Electronic trading

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the April 28th, 2008

Electronic trading is a mode of trading that uses information technology to bring together a buyer and a seller through electronic media to create a virtual market place. Markets such as the new age stock exchanges are prime examples of electronic market places.

Historically, stock markets used to be physical locations where buyers and sellers met and negotiated. However with the improvement in communications technology, the need for a physical location no longer is of any importance as the buyers and sellers can electronically exchange indications of interests as well as negotiate from a remote location.

Not only are these markets in tune with the current developments in information technology, but they are also easy to monitor and manage. These are major drivers for most market regulators to insist that all markets eventually must be developed electronically.

NASDAQ, set up in 1971, was the world’s first electronic stock market. It took 35 more years for the NYSE to automate its trading process but it is now clear that the days of exchange floor trading are coming to an end.

Today many investment firms on both the buy and sell side are increasing their spending on technology for electronic trading. At the same time many floor traders and brokers are being removed from the trading process. Traders are relying on algorithms to analyze market conditions and then execute their orders.

States. Six Assurances

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the April 27th, 2008

The Six Assurances are guidelines used in conducting relations between the Republic of China and the United States of America. They were proposed in 1982 by the Republic of China during negotiations between the United States and People’s Republic of China over the Joint Communique on Arms Sales to Taiwan. The U.S. government agreed to these points and informed the United States Congress of this in July 1982. The Six assurances were:

  1. The United States would not set a date for termination of arms sales to Taiwan.
  2. The United States would not alter the terms of the Taiwan Relations Act.
  3. The United States would not consult with China in advance before making decisions about U.S. arms sales to Taiwan.
  4. The United States would not mediate between Taiwan and China.
  5. The United States would not alter its position about the sovereignty of Taiwan which was that the question was one to be decided peacefully by the Chinese themselves, and would not pressure Taiwan to enter into negotiations with China.
  6. The United States would not formally recognize Chinese sovereignty over Taiwan.

Specialized sector of the Pitman arm

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the April 25th, 2008

The Pitman arm is a steering component in an automobile or truck.

The Pitman arm is a linkage attached to the steering box (see recirculating ball) sector shaft, that converts the angular motion of the sector shaft into the linear motion needed to steer the wheels. The Pitman arm is supported by the sector shaft and supports the drag link with a ball joint. It transmits the motion it receives from the steering box into the drag link, causing it to move left or right to turn the wheels in the appropriate direction. The idler arm is attached between the opposite side of the centre link from the Pitman arm and the vehicle’s frame to hold the centre link at the proper height.

Golf property waterfront Grand Haven Golf Club

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the April 25th, 2008

Grand Haven Golf Club is a public golf course located in Grand Haven, Michigan. Very close to the Lake Michigan shore, the golf course takes advantage of the thick hardwood forest and natural sand dunes of the southwest Michigan shoreline. Golf Digest magazine ranked the club as “one of the nation’s Top 50 public courses” for over ten years. The club has hosted several significant events, including the LPGA Shoreline Classic.

Originally established in 1965, the course was built and operated by the Matthews family of Grand Haven. According to its own web site, the club “had admittedly seen better days” when new ownership—the Rooney Golf Group, LLC. of Stillwater, Oklahoma—purchased the property in 1998. A new clubhouse has been built and the course itself is undergoing renovation and improvement, with rolling fairways and fast, sharp-breaking greens. Currently, the course is 6789 yards from the black championship tees with a course/slope rating of 73.4/134. The white tees are 6194 yards with a rating of 70/128. The red tees (ladies/seniors/juniors) are 5284 yards with a rating of 70.6/122.

Maurice Woodruff (1920-1985) was an English seer or clairvoyant, and astrologer based in London. He achieved considerable fame, travelling to Los Angeles to record television shows, amongst other international appearances.

His most notable client was the actor Peter Sellers, who was reluctant to make a major decision without a consultation. It has been alleged that he accepted bribes from studios wanting the actor to make a film to slant a prediction in their favour. He claimed to receive 14,000 letters each week. Always heavily in debt, he kept a flat in Hampstead and a country house as well as running a Rolls-Royce. He wrote a book, Woody, about his mother, also a psychic. He was openly gay and nominated his long-term lover and manager Harry Arnold as his successor. He died in Singapore while doing a show there.

Maurice was host of the hour-long program, Maurice Woodruff Predicts, a short-lived talk show syndicated for only part of 1969.

Stephen Fry portrayed Woodruff in the 2004 film The Life and Death of Peter Sellers.

Potential buyers Bioconcentration factor

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the April 23rd, 2008

Bioconcentration factor is the concentration of a particular chemical in a tissue per concentration of chemical in water (reported as L/kg).
This physical property characterizes the accumulation of pollutants through chemical partitioning from the aqueous phase into an organic phase, such as the gill of a fish.

High potential BCF>1000;
Moderate Potential 1000>BCF>250;
Low potential 250>BCF.

The bioconcentration factor is related to the octanol-water partition coefficient (Kow) by the following equation:

<math>log (BCF) =0.79 log K(ow) - 0.4</math> Regul Toxicol Pharmacol. 1985 Dec;5(4):422-31.

Estate broker Real Low cost broker

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the April 22nd, 2008

A low-cost brokerage can be considered to be a special case of
a discount brokerage which functions in a similar way to a
dividend reinvestment program.

Low-cost brokers are generally less expensive for an investor who invests
in small amounts (say, fixed dollar amounts) and who is not particular that
the stock trade must happen in real time.

One way that could lower cost for these brokers is by executing orders only a few times a day by aggregating
orders from a large number of small investors into one or more
block trades which are made at certain specific times
during the day. Such block trades are also sometimes referred to as
window trades. Window trades help lower costs in two ways:

  • By matching buy and sell orders within the firm’s order book the overall quantity of stock to be traded can be reduced thus reducing commissions.
  • The broker can split the bid-ask spread with the investor when matching buy and sell orders - a win-win situation in most cases

Since investor money is pooled before stocks are bought or sold, it enables
investors to contribute small amounts of cash using which fractional shares
of specific stocks can be purchased. This is usually not possible with a
regular stock broker.

Low-cost brokers also provide real-time trades, but these are usually (but
not necessarily) charged a higher commission.

Specialized sector Hyperbolic sector

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the April 20th, 2008

A hyperbolic sector is a region of the Cartesian plane {(x,y)} bounded by rays from the origin to two points (a, 1/a) and (b, 1/b) and by the hyperbola xy = 1.

A hyperbolic sector in standard position has a = 1 and b > 1 .

The area of a hyperbolic sector in standard position is loge b . (Proof: Integrate under 1/x from 1 to b, add triangle {(0, 0), (1, 0), (1, 1)}, and subtract triangle {(0, 0), (b, 0), (b, 1/b)} )

When in standard position, a hyperbolic sector corresponds to a positive hyperbolic angle.

Property vacation property Perfect set property

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the April 20th, 2008

In descriptive set theory, a subset of a Polish space has the perfect set property if it is either countable or has a nonempty perfect subset.

As nonempty perfect sets in a Polish space always have the cardinality of the continuum, a set with the perfect set property cannot be a counterexample to the continuum hypothesis, stated in the form that every uncountable set of reals has the cardinality of the continuum.

The Cantor-Bendixson theorem states that closed sets of a Polish space X have the perfect set property in a particularly strong form; any closed set C may be written uniquely as the disjoint union of a perfect set P and a countable set S. Thus it follows that every closed subset of a Polish space has the perfect set property. In particular, every uncountable Polish space has the perfect set property, and can be written as the disjoint union of a perfect set and a countable open set.

It follows from the axiom of choice that there are sets of reals that do not have the perfect set property. Every analytic set has the perfect set property. It follows from sufficient large cardinals that every projective set has the perfect set property.
